We have had a busy week but next week promises to be equally busy. We will be using the computer labs next week on two occasions for research activities. The Chapter 10 test is Friday, Oct. 15th. A study guide will be given on Tuesday, Oct12th.
I am concerned about developing productive study habits with our Sea Horses. Reading is important and is different from "skimming" information. I have noticed this happening in the classroom setting. When reading, students should pay special attention to words highlighted in yellow. These words are also defined in the magins of textbook pages. Words in italics are important but are often missed by the "skimming" technique.
It is beneficial for adolescents to study shorter periods of time more frequently than to study for an hour the night before a test. Making flash cards or matching games is also useful. Repetition is a valuable tool. I have also discussed the process of eliminating answers based on recognition of chapter terms.
I allow students to make test corrections on their tests but there are two criteria. There must be a parent signature so that I know the students are communicating with their parents about their progress. Also, test corrections are due the following day. This prevents overlapping material as we move on to the next area of study. Many students chose not to do test corrections for the Chapter 9 test that could have benefitted from them. I will possibly take an afternoon the week after the Chapter 10 test to do corrections but the tests must still have the parent signature for credit. Would you be interested in that plan?
Enjoy the lovely weekend!
