Summertime, here we come!

Days are counting down and summer is approaching.  This has been a great year and it's time for our Sea Horses to swim away.  They leave our team hopefully with great memories and lots of knowledge that will serve them well as they prepare for 7th grade.
Thank you to all of the parents for their support and help this year.  Thanks to my teammates for making it rewarding and exciting to come to MCMS every day.  Thanks mostly to my students for filling my days with smiles and giving me the opportunity to share time and knowledge with them.
Have a great summer,
Leslie Becton

Spring is here

Although the weather doesn't always cooperate, spring is here and students are beginning to look forward to summer (me too)and 7th grade.  They need to slow down and help us complete this year successfully and on a positive note.
There are some things I need for all students to remember:
Bring pencils to school - I give away 2-3 dozen weekly. (coming to class unprepared is very stressful)
Continue to write in your planners daily.  (coming to class unprepared is very stressful)
Complete all assignments to the best of your ability - that includes homework (coming to class unprepared is very stressful)
Study for tests (coming to class unprepared is very stressful)
Follow procedures and be well behaved. (I know you can!)
Dress according to the MCMS dress code.  (It is written in  the front of the student planners.)

EOGs will be here before you know it.  I wish for every student to be successful.  Let's enjoy the spring but work hard and make this year the best ever!

December 8, 2010

Alot has happened since my last post.  I have lost two important people in my life within a five week period.

School is winding down for 2010 and will pick back up in 2011.  There is lots going on that is keeping us busy at this time of the year.  We witnessed a "Rachel's Challenge" presentation and are hoping to start a "chain reaction" at Morehead City Middle School that will spread throughout our community.

"Caring by Sharing" is in full swing!  Each homeroom is collecting food items that will help families at MCMS.  We are graciously accepting food donations as well as financial donations.

We just finished Trimester 1 and are currently working in Trimester 2.  Students took a Trimester 1 Assessment for their core classes to practice the actual testing scenerio that they'll see with "End of Grade" tests in May.  We will practice each trimester.

Our unit of study is Ecosystems.  We will take a test on Thursday, December 16th on Chapter 18.

Friday, December 17th will be an early release day.  Students will dismiss at 12:00.  I hope everyone has a safe and restful vacation.

Friday, October 8, 2010

We have had a busy week but next week promises to be equally busy.  We will  be using the computer labs next week on two occasions for research activities.  The Chapter 10 test is Friday, Oct. 15th.  A study guide will be given on Tuesday, Oct12th.

I am concerned about developing productive study habits with our Sea Horses. Reading is important and is different from "skimming" information.  I have noticed this happening in the classroom setting.  When reading, students should pay special attention to words highlighted in yellow.  These words are also defined in the magins of textbook pages.  Words in italics are important but are often missed by the "skimming" technique.

It is beneficial for adolescents to study shorter periods of time more frequently than to study for an hour the night before a test.  Making flash cards or matching games is also useful. Repetition is a valuable tool. I have also discussed the process of eliminating answers based on recognition of chapter terms.

I allow students to make test corrections on their tests but there are two criteria.  There must be a parent signature so that I know the students are communicating with their parents about their progress.  Also, test corrections are due the following day.  This prevents overlapping material as we move on to the next area of study.  Many students chose not to do test corrections for the Chapter 9 test that could have benefitted from them.  I will possibly take an afternoon the week after the Chapter 10 test to do corrections but the tests must still have the parent signature for credit.  Would you be interested in that plan?

Enjoy the lovely weekend!

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

We have had lots of sunshine but cooler temperatures this week.  We began our study of the solar system with the sun, the moon and Earth.  We are now broadening our horizon and adding galaxies, stars and other planets to our knowledge base.  The Chapter 10 test will be Friday, October 15th.  We created moon craters today and will plan a trip to the moon this week as well.  All students should begin reading the chapter and look over all terms highlighted in yellow or in italics.  It is never too early to prepare for the upcoming test.
Fall has arrived!

Rainy Week

This has been a rain soaked week - hard to stay focused when it is pouring buckets full outside the classroom windows.  We have been covering Chapter 9 for the past two weeks and our test is scheduled for tomorrow, October 1, 2010.  Students have all pertinent information.
There have been some behavior issues.  I will be making contact with some parents in the near future.
